Eric M. Bailey Talks Wholly Shift! with PRSA Phoenix During Black History Month

Black History Month is the brainchild of historian Carter G. Woodson who founded “Negro History Week,” which was created to celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans. History.com reports that since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.
The PR Museum website highlights Black PR Pioneers' history and notable accomplishments. Some of the early Black Pioneers in the public relations industry that have made groundbreaking strides include Joseph Varney Baker, Pat Tobin, Moss Hyles Kendrix, Inez Kaiser and D. Parke Gibson.
PRSA Phoenix members celebrated Black History Month at the Ability360 center on Feb. 28 with award-winning keynote speaker Eric M. Bailey.
Bailey, a human relationships and communication expert, has been featured on CNN, Huffington Post, Forbes and several podcasts. His presentation, Wholly Shift! It’s time to completely change the conversation on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs was a lively hands-on discussion that highlighted the best practices for effective communication. Utilizing audience participation, Bailey gave real-world examples and shared teachable moments.
Three key takeaways include:
- Bias is not inherently bad, what is important is to understand how people's experiences shape someone's biases to better understand where they are coming from and to better communicate with them.
- We don't always have to fight to be right. We can disagree with people, hear their point of view and do our best to understand them.
- Be radically curious and the first to listen in all areas of life.
Attendees were treated to Southern-style Chicken & Waffles (with a vegan option), coffee, tea and fresh fruit at the breakfast meeting held at the Ability360 center, which was the perfect location for DEI training as the facility provides nonprofit services for individuals with disabilities and addresses disability concerns for their family members, co-workers and employers.
The author of The Cure for Stupidity, Bailey has presented his unique training to Google Inc, the US Air Force, Los Angeles County, the City of St. Louis, MO, Phoenix Police Department and many more organizations.
