Have you considered learning more about APR? The Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) credential certifies your drive, professionalism, and principles, setting you apart from your peers and positioning you as a leader and mentor in the competitive public relations field.

PRSA-Phoenix is highlighting APR member Marcia Paterman Brookey (she/her/hers). Marcia is the Senior Marketing Manager at PwC and has worked in public relations for 14 years.

Question: How has PRSA's APR program helped propel your career?
Answer: I have become a strategic PR professional. I often say that, before earning the Accreditation in Public Relations, I planned and executed campaigns shooting from the heap. I didn’t know that there was a method for doing anything I did in my role. I came up with fun ideas and tried them. There was no research, let alone strategy! “What do you mean ‘strategy?’ It was all trial and error. Did the event have an ROI? No? Oh, well. Did we waste thousands of dollars on a brochure that no one reads? Oh, well. Should we sponsor this event? Sure, why not? I didn’t know that there is a wealth of information, effective strategic thinking, and a formula (known as the RPIE Process) to develop, implement, execute and evaluate a campaign. The APR gave me the tools to do what I do, but better, with data, with a proven method, and with confidence.

Q: What advice would you give to those who are interested in obtaining their APR?
A: Take the plunge; you will be surprised at how much it will benefit your career and impact your employer’s outcomes. It’s never too late and you will be glad you did it. Read the Study Guide.
