Josh Pullen is our talented digital communications intern for 2024. Josh is bringing a fresh perspective and enthusiasm to our digital communications committee.
Josh grew up in Gilbert, Arizona, a place he remembers with dairy farms and one-lane roads, not the large suburb it is today.
His journey into public relations began at Arizona State University in 2019, where he initially set his sights on a career in sports journalism. However, it wasn't long before Josh discovered his true calling in public relations. From leading cybersecurity focus groups to managing the social media presence of the 2023 Arizona State Fair, Josh's early career has been marked by diverse and impactful experiences.
We had the joy of sitting down with Josh to discuss his journey, aspirations and the career future he envisions.
What was the moment that made you realize that PR was the industry for you?
If I had to pick a moment, probably sometime in the middle of my second year of college. I was surrounded by all these aspiring journalists looking to be the one to break the next big story. I had this realization that I didn’t want to be the one writing the story, I wanted to be the one sharing the story. I found that PR allowed me to share stories and information at different levels. Whether it was sending out a press release on a client’s new product or strategizing communications methods for specific audiences, PR gave me the means to share information more effectively.
Why do you believe public relations is important?
Public relations is extremely important as it helps create an identity for your brand. Being able to send the right message that not only reaches your audience but resonates with them as well is crucial. Having a strong PR presence can significantly elevate a brand’s profitability, social media presence, or any other strategic goal you might have.
What is your favorite aspect of PR?
That there is no right answer. One company's strategic strategies might be perfect but not necessarily be the right for another company. You don’t really know what’s going to work until you try. It’s all trial and error when incorporating strategies that will best resonate with your audience.
Is there a specific brand or company that you enjoy from a PR scope?
One brand that impresses me from a PR perspective is the Buffalo Bills. Across all their social media platforms, the Bills maintain an entertaining presence by showcasing their players with “outside of football” content, engaging community initiatives, personnel updates, and more. They’ve successfully cultivated a dedicated fan base known as Bills Mafia while also consistently producing content that any football fan could enjoy. It’s always fun to see what they’re going to do next, even during the offseason
What do you hope to get out of your time as a PRSA intern?
My hope with this internship is to gain valuable experience that I can apply toward the next steps of my career. I’m eager to take advantage of this chance to collaborate with PRSA, build connections, and expand my knowledge within the industry. PRSA is a fantastic organization with a vast network of PR professionals and offers me opportunities for hands-on experience, further enhancing my skills.
Where do you see your PR career in 10 years?
Even though I decided not to pursue a career in sports journalism, I still have a passion for working in sports, most likely a franchise’s communications department. I would love to implement a team’s media relations activities such as coordinating player and coach interviews, releasing promotional content and increasing fan engagement for the team. Sports are more than just the game itself and have a tremendous amount of outreach in communities so I would work toward making the team resonate with anyone.
