PRSA-Phoenix is lucky to have a multi-dimensional, up-and-comer join our public relations and communications forces.
Samantha, or Sam for short, joined PRSA in June of 2023. The recent ASU graduate and Arizona native is passionate about creative storytelling through written and digital communication.
She started college as a business communication major because she wanted to work in corporate business. It didn’t take long to realize that her mind and heart were elsewhere - in writing and exploring her creativity. Sam decided to make the switch to communication and researched the unique career available. She graduated in the spring of 2023 with a B.A. in communication and a minor in public relations.
We spoke with Sam to learn more about her journey and goals in public relations.
Q: What was the moment that made you realize that PR was the industry for you?
A: When I was a sophomore in college I wanted to get into PR for all the wrong reasons. Whenever I saw a powerful woman depicted in a Hollywood film, she worked in PR. For example, Samantha from the movie Sex and the City or Emily from the movie A Simple Favor. I saw that PR could make you good money so I thought to myself, I need to get into this career. It will provide me with both money and status. However, it was not until I added a focus in PR and strategic communication that my coursework drastically changed. I was working on a lot of writing pieces, PowerPoint slide decks, and public speaking. This is when I found out that I had such a passion for writing, more specifically storytelling. I started to fall in love with my coursework and the industry that I originally wanted to go into, just because it would generate a lot of income.
Q: What do you hope to get out of your time as PRSA intern?
A: PRSA is such a huge authoritative figure in the PR industry. I am hoping to use this amazing opportunity to work alongside PR professionals to network and gain more knowledge of the industry. As a recent college grad, I am constantly searching for opportunities to apply what I learned in my courses to the corporate world and real-life projects. I want as much hands-on experience as I can get.
Q: Where do you see your PR career in 10 years?
A: In ten years I see myself working as a Public Relations Director. I want to be in charge of overseeing the daily operations of my public relations team. I want to be the voice of a company and watch my PR team grow in their pursuits.
