The Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism is an annual award presented by the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.  The annual Cronkite Luncheon has become one of the biggest and most anticipated events in the Phoenix metropolitan area each year, with leaders from the worlds of media, politics, business and education joining Cronkite School students and faculty. About 1,000 people attend each year.

The 38th honoree is Al Roker, the Emmy award-winning weatherman and popular anchor for NBC NEWS’ TODAY. Roker was recognized for his renowned weather coverage, reporting on some of the worst storms and natural disasters in history, including Hurricane Wilma, Hurricane Isaac, Superstorm Sandy and the earthquake in Haiti.

Avnet raffled away tickets at their table for the luncheon at the PRSA Phoenix 2022 Kickoff this February. PRSA Phoenix members Heather Vana, Kimberley Hoidal, Lisa Sass and Rachael Clifford were excited to join and support the future of journalism and celebrate this year's honoree.

Kimberley had this to say about attending the event: "I grew up watching the Today Show. When my parents first let me get a 'small' TV for my bedroom, I would get ready for school watching the morning program. Al has always been a mainstay on the show since he joined in 1996, as trusted Willard Scott began his journey into retirement. I enjoyed watching Al embrace his role as a national weatherman and the stories he captured along the way, whether during natural disasters or with his lighthearted Roker-a-thon, he captured our country's heart. Roker may seem like an unlikely recipient of the Walter Cronkite Award. However, he embodies the excellence of the reporting that Cronkite brought into living rooms across our country: integrity, accuracy, fairness and objectivity."
