PRSA Phoenix is launching its annual Mentorship Program. Are you considering signing up? Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the program.
Already know you want to join this year’s program? Applications are open between now and March 3. Submit your application.
- Who should be a mentor? Mentee?
The short answer is anyone! A good mentor has wisdom and is willing to share it. A mentor has experience navigating what’s on the horizon for their mentee, helping them develop their skills, and motivating them to achieve their goals. In the past, we’ve had mentors who are retired PR pros looking to give back down to mid-career pros who want to help students find a job after college.
A good mentee takes achieving their goals seriously and knows that reaching them requires support, especially from a mentor. Mentees are often students or new pros who need help navigating the first stage of their careers, but we’ve also seen mid-career and up pros want to be matched with someone more experienced who can help them through a tricky season in their life.
- What makes a good mentor-mentee relationship?
Trust, listening, curiosity, and empathy are the foundation of good mentorship. Setting clear, measurable goals at the beginning ensures you’re both on the same page and can track progress.
Mentorship is a two-way street. Both the mentee and mentor need to practice active listening. The mentee needs to be open to constructive feedback, and the mentor needs to be able to share advice authentically.
Making time for each other is a no-brainer but also essential! The relationship won’t go anywhere if you’re not frequently discussing ways to achieve your goals.
- How often should we meet?
This is something the mentor and mentee should agree on at the beginning. We recommend at least once a month for an hour, but it really depends on the pair and your goals for the program. Many pairs meet once a week virtually while others make it a point to grab coffee once a month.
- Where do we meet?
This is up to you and your match. You can meet virtually, in person, attend events together (including PRSA Phoenix events!). It really depends on how flexible your schedule is and your personal preferences.
- Why join the mentorship program?
There are many benefits to mentorship. In fact, I wrote an article about the benefits last year.
One of the biggest ones is community. PRSA Phoenix wants to strengthen our local PR community by offering opportunities for our members to learn from each other and build their networks. Mentorship is a tangible way to get more involved in PRSA and take charge of your professional development.
