Meet PRSA Phoenix Ethics Chair Jessica Moran, MA, APR. A passionate communicator and longtime PRSA member, Jessica values the connections, mentorship, and continued learning the organization provides. She shares her journey from journalism to public relations and earning her APR and how it helped shape her thoughtful, strategic approach to communications and leadership.
What inspired you to join PRSA?
I’ve done a few “tours” in PRSA over the years, starting nearly 20 years ago with the Chicago chapter. I was new to the industry, having transitioned from journalism, and PRSA’s training and events helped me build skills and confidence beyond what I was learning on the job.
How has being part of PRSA impacted your career or perspective on public relations?
Being part of PRSA has allowed me build meaningful relationships with other communicators and learn from a wide range of perspectives across the profession. It also introduced me to the APR and its significance to our profession, which ultimately reshaped how I think about PR as a strategic, research-driven function.
What is one valuable lesson or skill you have gained in PRSA?
Learning and applying the RPIE model through the APR process. It reinforced the importance of grounding communications in research and strategy—not just execution—and continues to share how I approach communications and reputation management.
Why would you recommend PRSA to someone interested in public relations?
PRSA offers something for everyone, whether you’re just starting out or are a seasoned practitioner. It’s a great way to stay connected to the industry, continue learning, and grow your network.
What is your favorite part about being involved in PRSA?
The people, hands down. I’ve always valued the opportunity to connect with others who are passionate about the profession, whether through mentorship, shared learning, or simply exchanging ideas and experiences.
What is a fun fact most people would not know about you?
I started my career in journalism—covering elections, community stories, and athlete and artist profiles (and even a few car reviews)—so I still instinctively think like a reporter when approaching PR.
